Upper Germany

DAY 1:

LONDON - ALTENBURG - DRESDEN

We pick you up at your selected hotel in London and drive you to the airport from where we take the morning flight to the city of Altenburg. You meet your DG at the airport, board your maxi-van and start this expedition. The first stop is the beautiful city of Dresden, where we visit the city castle, Church of Our Lady, the very famous Semper's Opera House and in the evening, take a walk around Zwinger, a part of old Dresden which is known for its bars, shops and restaurants. Dinner and overnight in Dresden.

DAY 2:

SWISS SAXONY

Breakfast. We depart for Swiss Saxony, a national park which is one of the most picturesque parts of eastern Germany. It lies between Dresden and the Czech Republic. We have most of the day to explore the park and some of the spa resorts like Stadt Wehlen and Schmilka and visit dramatic viewing points over the river Elbe. Return to Dresden and take some extra time to explore the city. Overnight in Dresden.

DAY 3:

WEIMAR - BUCHENWALD

Breakfast. Our expedition takes us to Weimar, the old capital of Sachsen. It was the place where Luther, Schiller, Bach, Liszt and Cranach worked, but most of all it is a town of Goethe. We visit his house and stroll around town. Next we visit the near-by Buchenwald, the cradle of humanism and the first capital of democratic Germany, sadly remembered as Hitler's concentration camp. Overnight in the Weimar area.

DAY 4:

HARZ - GOSLAR

Breakfast. Harz is a hilly countryside, the highest in northern Germany. We take a narrow-gauge railway with beautiful panoramic views to the highest peak Brocken. The expedition ends in the old mining town of Goslar. We take a walk around the old part of town; the Marktplatz and houses dating from the 16C and 17C. Overnight in the Goslar area.

DAY 5:

CELLE

Breakfast. Depart from Goslar towards Celle, another lively town, known mostly for its half timbered houses with crow-stepped gables from the 16C - 18C. We visit the White Castle where the Welf dynasty lived in the 14C. You have also free time to explore the town on your own. Overnight in the Celle area.

DAY 6:

LUNEBURG - HAMBURG

Breakfast. Our expedition takes us further north, where our first stop is the former salt town of Luneburg. It was built on salt deposits and with salt trade money. We visit the beautiful Town hall, which is an amalgam of architectural styles from the 13C - 18C. In the afternoon we arrive in the biggest German port - Hamburg, where we enjoy a panoramic stroll around the city. Overnight in Hamburg.

DAY 7:

HAMBURG

Breakfast. We start with a boat tour around the port, visit the old part, Rathausmarkt with its impressive City Hall and Deichstrasse with its lovely restaurants. We drive to Alster Lake with small villages around its shores. The village of Poseldorf has a row of "brauhauses", where you can try "Lutt um Lutt", a strong beer mixed with schnapps. You have time to visit the Fishmarket and try some local food like eel or plum soup. Overnight in Hamburg.

DAY 8:

LUBECK

Breakfast. Depart to Lubeck which was once the capital of the Hanseatic League, the trading union of 150 German cities in the 14C. It is still as much girdled with canals and crowned with belfries and towers as it was at the peak of its power. We visit the Altstadt on the island, the beautiful Holstentor gate, the cathedral, Kolkstrasse with its museums and theatres, City Hall and the Niederegger marzipan shop. Overnight in Lubeck.

DAY 9:

RATZEBURG

Breakfast. We explore the nearby island town of Ratzeburg. We visit the red-brick romanesque cathedral. The town is situated close to the former border between West and East Germany. Also it may be possible to drive to Travemunde on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Overnight in Lubeck.

DAY 10:

POTSDAM

Breakfast. We continue our expedition to Potsdam, the former capital of Brandenburg. The most famous sight in Potsdam is castle Sanssouci, which was the summer residence of the Prussian King Frederick the Second. We visit the New Palace and the park with its Chinese Tearoom, theatre and Belvedere. In the afternoon we stroll around the Dutch quarter. Overnight in Potsdam.

DAY 11 & DAY 12:

BERLIN

Breakfast. Two days of exploring the capital of Germany. We visit all the main sights Brandenburger Tor, Alexanderplatz, Checkpoint Charlie, Charlottenburg castle and the Reichstag. We visit the fleamarket in Prenzlauer Berg and also the Turkish Market in Maybachufer. There is enough free time for shopping in the famous KaDeWe, the biggest mall in Europe. Also not to miss is Ku'damm, a shopping street and a place of our farewell dinner. Overnights in the center of Berlin.

DAY 13:

BERLIN - LONDON

Breakfast. Drive to the airport from where we will fly to London. End of our expedition.
