DAY 1:
ROMAN CASTLES
You meet your DG at the airport, board your maxi-van and start this expedition. The first sights are villages near Rome, which are named the Roman Castles, where the gentry of the past built their weekend villas and castles. Dinner and accommodation in the area.
DAY 2:
LAKE ALBANO - CASTEL GANDOLFO - VIA APPIA
Breakfast. We start our expedition around the scenic Lake Albano. We stop at the Papal residence, Castel Gandolfo, and see the enchanting town of Albano Lazziale on the Via Appia. We follow this old Roman road south to the sea. Overnight in the Napoli area.
DAY 3:
NAPOLI
Breakfast. The capital of southern Italy is filthy, football crazy, impossible to drive around and has a distinct charm of its own. We do most of the sightseeing by foot in the center between the port, Piazza Garibaldi and Via Toledo, we see the Castel Nuevo and the Castel Capuano, the Forcella open air market, the beautifully preserved area of Spaccanapoli and many churches. Overnight in Napoli area.
DAY 4:
VESUVIO - POMPEII
Breakfast. You can climb to the Mount Vesuvio crater, or check out the old Herculaneum ruins. But we do visit the better known and bigger of the two towns that were covered in ashes when the volcano erupted - Pompeii. We see the most interesting parts of this huge arhceological area. Overnight in Napoli area.
DAY 5:
AMALFI
Breakfast. We continue our expedition to the south and after some steep driving we arrive to the famous resorts on the Amalfi coast. Once in Amalfi we walk up the steps to the beautiful Cathedral and stroll along the promenade. Overnight in Amalfi.
DAY 6:
POSITANO - SORRENTO
Breakfast. The first stop of the day is the Emerald Cave. If you wish you can see this interesting natural feature to which you first take an elevator and then a boat. Then Positano with its romantic setting and last - Sorrento, another famous resort. Overnight in Sorrento.
DAY 7:
CAPRI
Breakfast. We explore the island of Capri, the place of legend and home to the Sirens which is only 20 minutes away from Sorrento by boat. The town of Capri is very picturesque but very steep so it would be wise to take the cable car to the top and then walk back down. Overnight in Sorrento.
DAY 8:
CAPUA - MONTECASSINO - L'AQUILA
Breakfast. Capua is the second biggest Roman amphitheatre from where Spartacus led his revolt. Montecassino altough renovated after allied bombing and not completely open to the public, it's worth having a look. In the region of Abruzzo we drive the back roads in the shadow of Gran Sasso, the highest peak of the Apennines. L'Aquila has a formidable Spanish Castello and a very odd medieval fountain with 99 waterspouts as the main sights of the town. Overnight in the L'Aquila area.
DAY 9:
SPOLETO - ASSISI
Breakfast. The expeditions along the backroads continues in to Umbria region and to Spoleto, with the beautiful upper town, castle Rocca, bridge and cathedral. There is also a splendid view over the Castlemonte Mountains. Once in Assisi, we visit the Basilica of St. Francis and have a stroll around the town. Overnight in the Assisi area.
DAY 10:
TODI - ORVIETO - OSTIA
Breakfast. Assisi was our northernmost stop and now we turn back to the south towards the Eternal city. First stop is in Todi with perfect medieval Piazza del Popolo, than Orvieto which is sitting on a tabletop plug of volcanic lava 300 meters over the valley. In the afternoon we drive towards the sea along the Roman Via Cassia and stay overnight in the Ostia area.
DAY 11:
ROME
Breakfast. We may stop and look at the ruins of Ostia Antica or head straight to Rome. We have an information-packed, panoramic tour and then stop at our city hotel. In the afternoon we stroll around the city between Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Fontana di Trevi. Overnight in the city of Rome.
DAY 12:
ROME
Breakfast. The first part is dedicated to the Vatican. We visit the cathedral of St. Peter and the Vatican Museum with Michelangelo's famous Sistine Chapel and the Angel's Castle. In the afternoon we walk through Roman Rome - the Forum Romanum and the Colosseum, the Capital hill and many more sights. Dinner and overnight in the city of Rome.
DAY 13:
ROME
Breakfast. Drive to the airport. End of our expedition.
