DAY 1:
BURGOS
You meet your DG at the airport, board your maxi-van and start this expedition. First stop is the gothic town of Burgos. The castle and the famous gothic cathedral are the main sights but the stroll along the river Arlanzon from the Plaza El Cid to the Arch of Santa Maria is also worth the effort. Dinner and overnight in Burgos.
DAY 2:
BURGOS
Breakfast. In the morning we will spend additional time in Burgos and later in the afternoon start the expedition over the central plateau towards the Valladolid area. It was at the peak of its power when Charles I. made it the seat of imperial government after his grandparents Fernando and Isabela were married here and the famous inquisitor Torquemada was born here. Overnight in Valadollid area.
DAY 3:
MEDINA - URUENA - TORDESILLAS
Breakfast. Full day of driving around the back roads and smaller cities of the central Castille, - such as Tordesillas where the Treaty that divided the new land was signed or Uruena with its well preserved walls. The day will end in the charming university town of Salamanca with a huge student population which makes it livelier than its neighbours. Overnight in Salamanca.
DAY 4:
SALAMANCA
Breakfast. We explore the compact and well preserved city center with the grandest of all Spain's plazas, Plaza Mayor, and the two cathedrals. We will not miss the splendid facade of the University and for good luck everyone will try to spot the frog. Overnight in Salamanca.
DAY 5:
LA ALBERCA - PENA DE FRANCIA
Breakfast. We explore the remote villages on the border with the Extremadura. We drive to the highest peak and have a splendid view over the surrounding area. Overnight in Salamanca.
DAY 6:
AVILA -SEGOVIA
Breakfast. The two jewels of Castilla: Avila is a beautifully preserved walled city, which lies 1130 meters high. As beautiful as Avila is, we are sure you will find Segovia even more breathtaking. The main sights are simply so uniquely set, that together they make a truly unforgettable experience. We visit the fairytale Alcazar, the cathedral and the Roman aqueduct made up of 163 arches. Overnight in Segovia.
DAY 7:
ESCORIAL
Breakfast. Today we enjoy more back roads experience as we drive around the megapolis of Madrid along the Sierra de Guadarrama. The first strop is at the Monastery of San Lorenzo in El Escorial which is a prime example of austere Spanish architecture under Phillip II in the 17C. We visit the huge complex with a couple of museums, the superb biblioteca, the Palace part and the Panteon of Kings where the Spanish royals are buried. Once in Toledo, we take a panoramic stroll. Overnight in Toledo.
DAY 8:
TOLEDO
Breakfast. We explore this imperial historic town. It was the city of Visigoths and Romans. It was called the city of three cultures, where Jews, Christian and Muslims used to live together in peace. It was a capital of Spain before Madrid took over and it is still the seat of the Spanish Catholic church. The old town which lies on a hill surrounded by the river Tajo on three sides is a fine mixture of architecture. Overnight in Toledo.
DAY 9:
CONSUEGRA - MOTA
Breakfast. This is the country of Don Quixote. We drive around La Mancha, checking out the beautiful villages, picturesque castles and the windmills. One of the best places to see this is the small town of Consuegra. We continue our expeditions towards the east and see some more interesting landscape with windmills around the town of Mota. Overnight in the area.
DAY 10:
BELMONTE - ALARCON - CUENCA
Breakfast. We continue the back road expedition to one of the best preserved Castillian castles, Belmonte. After Napoleon III lost everything, his wife, the empress Eugenie made this castle her home for a while. To change the landscape a bit we drive to a more wooded area of the hills around the interesting town of Cuenca. The most striking element of this medieval city are the so-called hanging houses - Casas Colgadas. Overnight in Cuenca area.
DAY 11 & 12:
MADRID
Breakfast. It is time to go to the capital of Spain. A short drive brings us into Madrid. We have an information packed panoramic tour around this fastgrowing, ever-expanding metropolis. Two days of exploring the central part around Palacio Real, Plaza Mayor and Plaza Santa Ana, Atocha train station, the three museums, of which Prado is the most famous, and the beautiful gardens and mansions of the Retiro park. The farewell dinner and two overnights in Madrid.
DAY 13:
MADRID
Breakfast. Drive to the airport. End of our expedition.
